![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Despite hating the Gods, Orual also fears them and she feels that she will be one day punished for the feelings of hatred she has towards them. Orual grow up blaming the Gods for her physical appearance and her hatred becomes even more pronounced when her little sister is taken away from her and sacrificed to the God of the Mountain. She was then told constantly by her father and by those around her that she is worthless because she does not fit in with the rest of her sisters and because no one would ever want to marry her. While Orual was born as a member of the royal family, she suffered all her life because he was ugly. The reason why she wanted to write in the first place was because she felt the need to express her anger against the Gods that in her opinion made her life harsh from birth. Orual begins writing her story when she is close to death but she recalls all her life and her experiences. ![]() Orual is the main character in the novel and she is also the narrator of the story.
